Dealing With Doubt

It's natural to have a little doubt in your life

Dealing With Doubt – Rev. Hank Wilson

Today, according to Pew Foundation research, many folks have doubts about religion.  They doubt whether God exists, and in fact, some are claiming that Jesus never existed, that He was a made up fictional person.  Their belief that He did not exist comes from their own prejudices because the reality is, documents from Roman and Jewish historians and even Roman authorities from that period mention Jesus, He was an historical character, He was a real life walking talking person.

So doubting His existence is silly, however wondering whether He was the Son of God or that He rose from the dead is a valid line of questioning.  In fact, those questions are not new; they have been around as long as the church.

In fact, there have been times when I have had a doubt about what I have been taught and believe.  The doubts usually occur when I face a serious life challenge or I am in difficult situations with no apparent way out.  I have questioned if Jesus is there for me.  It is a totally natural reaction to stress and one that I have worked hard on overcoming and when I am facing such a situation I remember the words in  Matthew 14:28-31 – The disciples were in a boat out and the lake and looked us and saw Jesus coming towards them, walking on the water. Of course, this surprised them and then we read; “Peter said to Him, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” And He said, “Come!” And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus.  But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!”  Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and *said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”

Peter was fine until he took his eye off the prize, began to have doubts, and stumbled.  Jesus’ words, ‘You of little faith’ holds a major truth.  When we lose our faith, we let doubt rule our lives and that is when we have problems.  You see, the problem is that I usually take my eyes off Jesus and let my mind wander.

When that happens, Satan creeps in and creates chaos and confusion.  Remember it is ok to wonder, to question and when and if you begin to doubt the reality that is Jesus, try to focus on the things He has already done in your life.  If you have never believed, in Him or you have doubts about Him check out our contact form.  I will be happy to get in touch with you and answer any questions you might have about the reality that is Jesus.
