Developing Persistence

With persistence you can overcome anything
One of my biggest faults is that sometimes I just do not have the persistence needed to follow through on things. What happens then is that I fail to accomplish my goals, I fail to achieve what I set out to achieve. Why is persistence important? For the reasons I stated above, persistence is the key to getting to your ultimate goal in life.

In Luke chapter 11, Jesus teaches us the importance of persistence, when he talks about a man who went to a friend and asks for bread. At first he is refused, but the man does not give up and then in verse 8 Jesus says, “I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will get up and give him as much as he needs.” The Lord is like that with us, if we pray for the strength to persist, eventually He will help us reach our goals.

But how on earth can we develop it? I have tried for years to overcome my desire to just say, ah the heck with it. How do I develop it? Don’t get sidetracked, over the years I have known many a champion rodeo competitor and I notices that they all followed the advice found in Proverbs chapter 4 verses 25-27 “Let your eyes look directly ahead And let your gaze be fixed straight in front of you. Watch the path of your feet And all your ways will be established.” They stayed focused on what they were trying to achieve, sometimes they had setbacks, but because they had persistence, they were able to overcome the obstacles and reach their goals.

Something I often forget is how we can learn from those who came before us, how we can see how their persistence and their belief in God taught them. Not only did I witness success from the rodeo competitors I have known, it is also in Job chapter 17 verse 5 “Nevertheless the righteous will hold to his way, And he who has clean hands will grow stronger and stronger.” We can keep our hands clean by not taking the short cut, by not giving up, by being the best Christian we can be.

God bless and peace y’all
