Life is full of challenges that we must cope with, there will always be mountains to climb and rivers to ford. Today I want to talk about how the Bible gives us the information we need to cope with these challenges.
How do I cope when life’s pain becomes overwhelming?
If you read the book of psalms, while at first, they may often seem not to make much sense, once you spend time with them you will begin to recognize prayers that help. That is, if we want them to and we suspend our natural human nature to doubt.
Trust God to care. That is difficult for us today because we often feel that if we announce we believe in God we will be attacked by those who don’t believe. We have to understand, that is a “them” problem not an “us” problem. We simply have to believe.
Cast your burden upon the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.”
Doubts are normal; I go through periods when I wonder is there any way things possibly ever work out. When that happens, I have to reread scripture and recite words like those I just read. Let go of your burdens.
How can I cope when life’s demands seem impossible?
There’s an old saying, no task is impossible, it just takes longer to accomplish. As a Christian, I place my faith in Jesus. I ask Him for help, I ask Him for guidance, and I know He will always answer me. I know He will always give me the strength to handle what I face. If you have attended a church service, I am sure you have heard this scripture at least once or twice.
In Philippians 4:13
“I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.”
It is important to understand that the scripture doesn’t say He will do all things for me, it says I can do all things because He will give me the strength to see things through. That’s an important difference. In my life, I have discovered that in those times when I just can’t find a way out, if I calm down, take a deep breath, a path appears that I can follow that helps to alleviate some of my anxiety.
How can I cope when others fail or hurt me?
This one area is perhaps the most troubling to use. When people we love and trust betray us or do things that cause us to feel emotional pain, it can be devastating to our lives. Jesus teaches us that we have to forgive them, even if they don’t ask for forgiveness or even realize that they have hurt us. So how can be best cope with the situation?
1 Peter 3:9
“not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for you were called for the very purpose that you might inherit a blessing.”
If we think about it for a minute, those words reflect ow Jesus dealt with forgiveness and coping with those who either hurt Him or wanted to hurt Him. If we repay hurt with hurt, anger with anger, we will never completely be at peace.
In the long run, the best way to cope with life’s issues, is to pray for guidance, turn it over to God, and then forgive those who have hurt us.
