Stop empowering politicians and start following the teachings of Jesus
Recently I was going over the teachings of Jesus and I began to examine my day to day life. As I scan the media these days, I am always fascinated by how angry many Christians seem to be; how so many are not following the teachings of Jesus. Folks are upset about this social issue or the other, they espouse hatred towards others, they are unwilling to reflect on how, or if, their daily life is in line with the teachings of Jesus. I understand many of their feelings, what I don’t understand is why their passion is directed towards getting some earthly politician elected and not on taking care of those less fortunate. Oh, I know that theoretically the politician might get some kind of legislation passed that has an impact, but most often, they are interested only in getting power and hanging on to it. They really don’t care about solving the problems, they care about keeping us upset and angry so they can stay in power and enrich themselves.
So it made me think, how about Christians put the same passion into actually following the teachings of Jesus and doing what Jesus called us to do. Things that so on the last day when we stand before Him, we will be able to proudly account for our lives and our actions. Remember He said, “For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.’ Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink? And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ The King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.’” Matthew 25:35-40
How about we Christians band together and made sure that the poor have enough to eat, the thirsty have enough to drink. How about we greet strangers to our shores with love and the teachings of Jesus, a positive message that can help them help themselves. How about we make certain that the homeless have enough clothing and the basic necessities for life that many of us take for granted. How about we reach out to those incarcerated and help them return to society and a better life.
If we truly believe in the teachings of Jesus, then we have to do what he told us to do. Peace y’all
